Dr. Berend found that a number of his patients complained about all kinds of different joint and muscle pains. Being an avid fly-fisherman, he recognized that many of the actions and motions that are part of the sport, when overdone, lead to these complaints. He initiated a study that attributed the pain and discomfort fishermen experience to the arm motions and standing on uneven surfaces while fishing. In fact, this study was so impressive that US News & World Report ran a story on it. He has also become a medical contributor to the American Angler magazine.

While the study identified all of the problems that his fellow fishermen were experiencing, short of seeing a medical professional, there was no way to treat these problems.
